What Is Water Safety and Why Is It Important for Kids

Understanding Water Safety from the Start
At AustGrade Swim School, we believe water safety is just as important as learning to swim. For children, especially, knowing how to behave in and around water can be life-saving. That’s why our programs focus on teaching more than just strokes — we teach awareness, confidence, and safety skills that will stay with your child for life.

Our swim school is dedicated exclusively to kids. Every class, every drill, and every technique is tailored to suit their developmental stage, ensuring they build water skills safely and effectively.

What Is Water Safety?
Water safety refers to the knowledge, skills, and behaviours that help prevent drowning and other water-related accidents. It includes learning how to swim, understanding water rules, recognising risks, and knowing how to react in emergencies.

For young children, water safety begins with awareness — understanding that water can be dangerous, even in shallow areas, and learning the basic skills to stay afloat and call for help when needed.

At AustGrade, these lessons are built into every level of our swimming programs, from babies to school-age kids.

Why Water Safety Is So Important for Kids

  1. Drowning Prevention
Sadly, drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for children in Australia. Backyard pools, bathtubs, and beaches can all pose risks. Teaching kids to float, swim to the edge, and signal for help can drastically reduce these risks.

Our swimming lessons for kids are designed with these scenarios in mind — not to scare, but to prepare.

  1. Confidence in Water Environments
Water safety isn’t just about danger; it’s also about confidence. When children know how to behave around water, they feel more at ease. This comfort leads to better learning, safer play, and a more enjoyable swimming experience overall.

In every AustGrade class, we make sure your child feels supported, safe, and celebrated as they build both skill and self-assurance.

  1. Skills for Life
Water safety is a lifelong skill. By starting early, children not only avoid risks now, but also develop a foundation for future swimming, boating, and recreational water activities.

Our goal is to make sure every child who learns at AustGrade carries those lessons well into adulthood.

How AustGrade Teaches Water Safety
We believe the best way to teach water safety is to make it part of every lesson — not just an occasional topic. Our programs are structured to introduce and reinforce safe water behaviours from the very first splash.

What we focus on:

  • Safe water entries and exits

  • Floating and treading water

  • Breath control and recovery

  • Emergency response and signalling

  • Respecting pool rules and instructor guidance

Our instructors are fully certified and trained in both water safety education and child development. That means your child isn’t just learning how to swim — they’re learning how to stay safe.

Programs Designed Just for Kids
At AustGrade Swim School, we don’t teach adults. Our focus is 100% on children — which means our class structure, teaching methods, and pool environment are all designed with young learners in mind.

Our programs include:

  • Infant classes (6 months – 2 years)

  • Toddler classes (2 – 3.5 years)

  • Beginner levels for preschool and school-age children

  • Stroke and safety development for advanced swimmers

Every level includes water safety milestones to ensure your child builds knowledge alongside technique.

Tips for Parents at Home
Water safety doesn’t stop at the swim school. Here are a few things parents can do at home:

  • Always supervise children near water, even shallow or still water

  • Install fences and secure pool gates

  • Store pool toys out of sight when not in use

  • Talk to your child about water rules and the importance of listening to adults

  • Enrol your child in regular swim lessons to maintain and build safety skills
