Baby and Toddler Swim Class at AustGrade Swim School
Swimming is a skill for life. In Australia, where pools, beaches and waterways are part of everyday family living, it is also one of the most important safety skills a child can have. The journey from a baby’s first time in the water to confident, independent swimming is a long one, and it begins with something simple: helping a child feel at home in the water.
AustGrade Swim School’s baby and toddler programme covers those first stages, from the Bluebottle Familiarisation Classes through to the toddler levels where children begin moving independently.

Why Early Water Familiarisation Helps
Babies and toddlers who experience warm, safe, enjoyable water environments from a young age tend to approach later stages of learning without fear or hesitation. That comfort is a genuine head start. Children who are relaxed in water spend their first formal lessons learning skills rather than managing anxiety.
It is just as important to be clear about what early lessons do not do. Royal Life Saving Society Australia’s position is that infants cannot, and should not, be expected to swim independently or to respond appropriately if they find themselves in water unexpectedly. Australian research suggests children begin mastering real water confidence and basic aquatic skills at around four years of age. Early classes build familiarity. They do not make a child safe in water.
Lessons Are One Layer, Not the Only One
Keeping young children safe around water depends on several layers working together:
- A compliant pool fence on all four sides, with a self-closing, self-latching gate that is never propped open
- Active adult supervision, with young children within arm’s reach at all times, including in the bath
- A current CPR qualification for parents and carers
- Swimming and water safety lessons
AustGrade’s programme contributes to the fourth layer. It is not a replacement for the first three, and no swim school should suggest otherwise.
Bluebottle Familiarisation Classes: From Two Months
AustGrade’s baby swim programme begins with the Bluebottle Familiarisation Classes. These parent-assisted sessions are not about stroke technique. They are about building a positive first relationship with water.
Sessions focus on gentle, guided activities: sensory play, movement, water pouring, gradual face-in-water familiarisation, and supported floating, all carried out by the parent or carer under instructor guidance. AustGrade follows AUSTSWIM’s developmentally appropriate approach and does not use forced submersion or forced back floating.
The pool is maintained between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius year-round, so babies stay comfortable and relaxed throughout, and each session becomes an experience they associate with warmth, closeness and enjoyment.
AustGrade accepts babies from two months of age. Parents are encouraged to check with their GP or child health nurse before a first lesson, particularly regarding immunisations and any history of ear or respiratory concerns.

Toddler Classes: One to Three Years
As children develop physically and cognitively, the programme introduces progressively more structured activities alongside continued play-based learning. Toddler classes begin to build the fundamentals: breath control, floating, kicking, and the ability to move toward the wall or pool edge.
Parent participation is gradually reduced as children develop confidence and independent movement. Instructors are trained to manage this transition sensitively, maintaining each child’s sense of security while gently encouraging independence.
What to Expect in Baby and Toddler Classes
AustGrade keeps class sizes small, with beginner classes limited to three students, so each child receives meaningful individual attention every session. Progress notes are recorded after each lesson in the AustGrade customer portal, giving parents visibility into their child’s development without waiting for a verbal update poolside.
A free trial lesson is available for new families, so parents and children can experience the AustGrade environment before committing to enrolment.
Where the Programme Goes Next
From around three years of age, children move into formal stroke instruction, and the pathway continues through to advanced stroke development coaching for children who want to refine and compete. There are no dead ends and no need to change schools as a child progresses.
